What is Yummy for Dogs?
Yummy for Dogs was founded in 1998 when I was working at the Third Place
Coffee house in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Third Place was, and still is,
a highly dog-friendly establishment, offering comfortable al fresca seating
for humans and dogs alike. It seemed more and more of the clientele were
arriving with canines in tow, and while we offered many delicious
vegetarian delights for humans, the dogs were a bit neglected menu-wise. I
had previously made homemade dog treats for my dad's adorable pound-rescued
aussie mix, so I asked Rich if he thought it would be a fun to offer
homemade dog treats, donating the proceeds to local shelters and animal
rescue organizations. He immediately gave me the go ahead and I began
production of Yummy for Dogs' Original Flavor Biscuits. The dogs clamored
for more. So I followed with Sunflower Treats, Peanut Butter Biscuits, and
more and more to the current 60-plus varieties of treats currently offered
both at The Third Place and at shelter events Yummy for Dogs is
occasionally invited to attend to help raise funds.
Then, I adopted my own dogs. I soon found was dissatisfied with most
commercial canine diets. After reading many books on canine health and
nutrition, I discovered that there was a more appealing way to feed my dogs
and began preparing delicious home cooked meals which they enjoy to this day.
This site is my way of sharing the recipes I've compiled, refined, and
developed over the years. I hope your dogs will enjoy these recipes as
much as my dogs, and the dogs of Third Place, do. Please, feel free to
start a Yummy for Dogs program in your area, I only ask that, in the
spirit of the Yummy for Dogs tradition, all monies collected using these
recipes, either in prepared or printed form, be donated to shelters and
rescue groups and that they not be used for personal profit or gain.
Why Yummy for Dogs?
Sylvia, a close friend of my dog Revco, has her own treat-getting
theme song her human mama sings to her whenever dog cookies are about to
make an appearance, the lyrics being, predominantly, "Yummy for dogs. Yummy
for dogs. Yummy for dogs." Sylv's smile and joyful doggie dance reaction to
this song was the same one I hoped my biscuits would evoke in the dogs who
enjoyed them, the same reaction I hoped the animals in the shelters and
rescues I support would have as they greeted their new guardians for life.
Yummy for dogs, indeed.
A note about the recipes:
Every dog has different nutritional needs and preferences so don't be
afraid to adapt recipes to suit your dog. There are many add-ins I like to
incorporate into the recipes, most notably Vegedog supplement powder and
Dr. Pitcairn's Healthy Powder, among others. Do what works for you and your pup.
